Do you know how old the “fresh” produce in your local supermarket is? Much of the food has been picked several days or even weeks ago. As the fruit or vegetable is harvested, it slowly loses nutrients. That’s why you want produce that’s as fresh as possible. Not to mention that it tastes much better.

 

Farmers Market
Your local farmers market is a great place to shop for fresh product. Farmers in the area will bring the fruits and vegetables they grow to the market. Often produce is picked that morning or the day before they bring it to the farmers market. You will also see a lot of organically grown produce at the farmers market. The prices are usually a lot lower than what you would pay at your local grocery store because you are cutting out quite a few middleman by buying directly from the farmers themselves.

 

Local Farmers & Gardeners
You can also contact local farmers in your area directly. As you are driving around, keep an eye out for “fresh produce” signs. There are many farmers and even hobby gardeners who are glad to sell you some of their excess produce. You may also want to check if there is a farmers or gardeners association in your town or city. It’s a great way to get to know a few local gardeners or farmer. By buying directly from these producers, you get the some of the freshest fruits and veggies.
